International Youth Day occurs annually on August 12th for the purpose of engaging the youth of the world in conversations with their local, national, and international leaders.
From workshops to meetings, showcases and performances, communities are called upon to encourage interaction between current leaders and those who will lead in the future.
The seed for International Youth Day was planted in August 1998, at a meeting in Lisbon of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth. This group recommended that a day each year be designated for highlighting the global impact of our youth.
In December 1999, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed this recommendation by passing a resolution declaring August 12 as International Youth Day. A unique theme is created annually to assist in focusing awareness on issues affecting youth around the world. By highlighting the role youth can take and the impact they can make on our global society, the hope is to engage youth and cultivate their increased contributions to their communities.
Campaign for National Unity – Sierra Leone will be joining other youth world-wide in celebrating this day. Plans are on-going for this unique and special day for the youth in Sierra Leone.
